Suffolk Qualify for National Knock Out phase of Over 50's County Championship Print E-mail
A slightly patchy but ultimately convincing win over Hunts saw Suffolk safely through to the Knock out phase of the over – 50’s county championship with 2 games to spare. Wins in the remaining games versus Leicestershire and Bedfordshire would see them gain a home draw for the first time.

On a cold dull overcast day at the lovely Exning ground Suffolk inserted Hunts and got off to a great start with Colin Scott claiming a couple of early wickets reducing the visitors to 48 for 3, however they recovered well and it wasn’t until the last 10 overs, where Hunts had progressed to 180 for 5, that Suffolk regained complete control taking the last 5 wickets for 21 runs, Scott finishing with 4 for 21 and skipper Tony Stubbs with 3 for 41. Disappointingly, several chances to have made the target of 202 much less, went begging and the ground fielding creaked when put under pressure from some excellent running from the Hunts middle order.

Suffolk’s reply started slowly but was gaining momentum when Walters (34) was out to a stunning caught and bowled with the score at 78 for 1 in the 20th over. Stubbs and Gallant added 20’s but the rate was climbing. Eventually Simon Halliday, who had glued the innings together with a patient 70, was bowled leaving Kevin Dobson and Peter Boughton to knock off the remaining runs with 10 balls to spare.

So off to Oakham and Leicestershire next week to decide who finishes 2nd in the group to Norfolk
