A MAJOR search is under way for those who would like to be umpiring or scoring next season.

The Association of Suffolk Umpires and Scorers are on the lookout for those whose cricketing careers are coming towards an end, but would still like to stay involved in the game.

A course for would-be umpires is due to start at Woolpit Institute next month and training officer Terry Snell is anxious to attract as many people as possible.
The Association provides umpires to cover a variety of matches, but in the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship this season, the resources have been stretched to the limit.

Appointments officer Barrie Phillpotts said: "Our aim is to cover the first three divisions, but for a variety of reasons it has not been possible to service Division Three with many umpires this season.

"This has been regrettable, but we are hoping if we can attract more people to our weekly winter courses that situation will not occur again next season."
Association chairman, Mick Blows, added: "It is vital we continue to provide the best service we can and there must be cricketers of all ages who would like to get involved in either umpiring or scoring."

A note is being sent to every club in the Two Counties Championship asking if they have anyone who would be interested in taking up umpiring and those who would like to don the white coat are asked to contact Terry Snell on 01449 760574 or 07766 543522.It is expected that a course for scorers will also take place at Woolpit Institute and anyone interested should contact Jean Quennell on 01473 710553 for further details.
