The Cricket Foundation launched the Chance to shine programme in May 2005, aiming to raise £50 million to fund cricket programmes and competition over ten years. Chance to shine is addressing the decline in competitive school cricket. The single biggest sports-development initiative ever undertaken in the UK, Chance to shine will reach one third of all schools in England and Wales over ten years and engage two million young people. The clear motivation behind Chance to shine lies in recognising the power of competitive team sports – and cricket in particular – to help young people develop skills and attitudes that will help them in all aspects of their future lives. Cricket is the ultimate team game. It demands both individual and collective responsibility. In Suffolk, along with our three County Schemes, we are proud to have 11 Clubs participating in the scheme, including: 100 schools have now signed up to the programme, nearly one third of all primary and middle schools in Suffolk! Each project provides a structured coaching and competition programme for a group of around six primary and secondary state schools. The group of schools is supported by professional, ECB qualified coaches engaged by each participating local cricket club. The scheme provides equipment, facility development (including playground markings and non-turf pitches) as well as training for state school teachers and coaches. Each project is funded for a minimum period of five years and once it’s ended, we work closely with schools and clubs to help them sustain cricket activities For further information about Chance to Shine in Suffolk or if you would be interested in getting involved, please contact: Martin Taylor, Suffolk Cricket Development Manager, 07827 254933 |
