Chance to Shine Project Print E-mail

The Cricket Foundation launched the Chance to shine programme in May 2005, aiming to raise £50 million to fund cricket programmes and competition over ten years.

Chance to shine is addressing the decline in competitive school cricket. The single biggest sports-development initiative ever undertaken in the UK, Chance to shine will reach one third of all schools in England and Wales over ten years and engage two million young people.

The clear motivation behind Chance to shine lies in recognising the power of competitive team sports – and cricket in particular – to help young people develop skills and attitudes that will help them in all aspects of their future lives.

Cricket is the ultimate team game. It demands both individual and collective responsibility.
Cricket insists upon high standards of conduct and provides good role models.
Cricket teaches leadership and team-work, as well as strategic awareness and risk-taking.
Cricket is wholly inclusive and draws together people from all cultures and backgrounds. It gives opportunities to boys and girls, as well as to those with disabilities.
Chance to shine is delivered through individual projects across England and Wales.

In Suffolk, along with our three County Schemes, we are proud to have 11 Clubs participating in the scheme, including:
o Bury St Edmonds CC
o Copdock CC
o Felixstowe CC
o Haverhill CC
o Ipswich & East Suffolk CC
o Ipswich CC
o Lowestoft CC
o St Margarets CC
o Stowmarket CC
o Stradbroke CC
o Worlingworth CC
These 11 Clubs and 3 County schemes have delivered 2500 hours of coaching in both school and club environments.

100 schools have now signed up to the programme, nearly one third of all primary and middle schools in Suffolk!

Suffolk Delivery Stats
We have delivered sessions to:
4515 new boys
3110 new girls

A total of 7695 young people experienced cricket because of us!

Total attendance at our sessions was over 25000!!!

We helped 198 new boys, and 64 new girls migrate to and join a local Cricket Club, a total of 262 young people.

Each project provides a structured coaching and competition programme for a group of around six primary and secondary state schools. The group of schools is supported by professional, ECB qualified coaches engaged by each participating local cricket club.

The scheme provides equipment, facility development (including playground markings and non-turf pitches) as well as training for state school teachers and coaches. Each project is funded for a minimum period of five years and once it’s ended, we work closely with schools and clubs to help them sustain cricket activities
