The very dry start to the autumn renovation programme caused a few headaches for those of us at the sharp end. Many squares were not irrigated enough before scarification which resulted in little or no thatch being removed. The resultant dust caused havoc with machinery air intakes and blades were worn down in no time. Many squares did not germinate for many weeks but the recent wet weather has got things going and many squares now need a light rotary mow to remove leaves and debris and top off the lush growth, this will also encourage the grass to tiller out and produce even more leaves. Worms need treating on a regular basis to stop casting. Fertiliser programmes need to be strictly followed, the second application of autumn analysis should have gone on by now. Dew brushing every morning or realistically 2 or 3 times a week must happen from now till March. All machinery needs to be serviced and sharpened. Fusarium is running riot in golf clubs at the moment due to the mild, wet weather. If you see this problem spray asap with an approved fungicide for a BASIS qualified representative. If this is a problem contact me. Cam – action spiking needs to be done anytime now. Up to half inch solid tines are ideal. Do not hollow tine under any circumstances unless under advice from a qualified adviser. TIM |
